Training and Skills

Training matrices and competency evidence for tenders Proving your people are competent, not just present.

Department: Ward Training and Nursing Competency

A method statement that claims a trained, competent workforce is a claim. A training matrix with names, dates and expiry tracking is evidence, and evaluators are trained to spot the difference.

What leaving training evidence alone costs you

Without documented training and skills records, a buyer assumes unverified workforce competence behind method statement claims, key-person dependency with no succession plan, social value commitments with no substance behind them, inconsistent site safety competence and a workforce that can't be evidenced under audit.

None of that may be true of you. It does not matter. In a tender, the assumption is what gets scored.

The training evidence point most manufacturers miss

Most manufacturers think competence is about running the course. It is about being able to produce the certificate, the date and the sign-off, six months later, without a scramble.

Training is an activity. Competence is a proof point. Auditors do not want to hear that you train your people. They want the matrix.

What training evidence support covers

Competency Mapping

Training matrices that show who is qualified for what, and when it expires.

Accredited Training

NVQs, apprenticeships, trade certifications, IOSH and NEBOSH qualifications.

Social Value Evidence

A Skills Development Plan and apprenticeship commitments that score in a tender.

Succession & Records

Key-person succession planning and audit-ready training documentation.

What training evidence looks like inside a manufacturer

  • A training matrix exists and shows who is qualified for what, and when it expires.
  • CPD records are current and can be produced on request.
  • Apprenticeship and development commitments are real and tracked.
  • Key-person dependency is identified and succession planning is underway.
  • Site inductions include a documented competency sign-off.
  • Training gaps are identified proactively, not discovered mid-contract.
  • Records are audit-ready, not scattered across individual managers' files.

Common questions about training and skills

What is a training matrix, and why do evaluators want one?

A training matrix is a grid showing each person, the skills and qualifications they hold, when they were achieved and when they expire. It turns the claim of a competent workforce into evidence an evaluator can check. Without one, a method statement is just an assertion.

Do apprenticeships count as social value in tenders?

Yes. Skills and employment are among the most common social value themes, and central government gives social value at least a 10% weighting under PPN 002. To score, the commitment has to be specific: how many apprentices, at what level, by when, and how you will report progress.

Which qualifications matter most on manufacturing tenders?

It depends on the contract, but buyers commonly look for IOSH Managing Safely for supervisors, NEBOSH for whoever leads health and safety, relevant NVQs and trade certificates, first aid cover, and equipment tickets such as forklift licences. What matters most is that every certificate is current and on the matrix.

Where does your business stand?

Most manufacturers I speak to have a rough idea. Buyers want proof. The free Bid & Tender Readiness Screening takes two minutes and shows you, category by category, where a buyer would stop reading. Does that make sense?
