Cyber Essentials and vCISO for UK manufacturers Protecting their data. Proving you can recover.

Department: Infection Control and Immunology

Cyber Essentials is now a formal gateway requirement on many public-sector contracts. Miss it, and you are excluded before price is even considered.

What leaving Cyber Essentials alone costs you

Without Cyber Essentials, a buyer assumes unmanaged devices and networks, unpatched systems, no incident response capability, weak data handling and you are a soft entry point into their supply chain.

That last one is the killer. An OEM will not share sensitive design data with a supplier it thinks is leaky.

The Cyber Essentials point most manufacturers miss

Most manufacturers think of cyber security as an IT problem. It is a governance problem, and Cyber Essentials is how a buyer checks your governance without ever needing to meet you.

A buyer will not hand sensitive data or system access to a business that cannot prove it is defended.

What Cyber Essentials support covers

Cyber Assurance

Cyber Essentials, Cyber Essentials Plus, ISO 27001 alignment, penetration testing and vulnerability management.

Network & Access Security

Patch management, multi-factor authentication, access control, segmentation, firewalls and email protection.

Data Protection & Privacy

UK GDPR, DPIAs, data retention, secure deletion and lawful handling of personal information.

What Cyber Essentials looks like inside a manufacturer

  • Firewalls, endpoints and cloud services are configured to a certified standard.
  • Multi-factor authentication is enforced on every account, including the directors'.
  • Software and firmware are patched on a schedule, not reactively.
  • Admin rights are restricted to the people who actually need them.
  • Staff can recognise and report phishing attempts.
  • A named person owns cyber risk at board level.
  • Backups are encrypted and, more importantly, tested.
  • An incident response plan exists and has been rehearsed.
  • Certification renews on schedule, not lapses unnoticed.

Common questions about Cyber Essentials and cyber security

Do I need Cyber Essentials to bid for government contracts?

Often, but not on every contract. Central government and NHS buyers should ask for it where a contract involves personal information, ICT handling OFFICIAL data or the day-to-day business of government, and many OEMs and prime contractors ask for it too. How to tell whether your next tender needs it

What is the difference between Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus?

Both cover the same five controls: firewalls, secure configuration, user access control, malware protection and security update management. Cyber Essentials is a self-assessment that is independently verified. Cyber Essentials Plus adds a hands-on technical audit, where an assessor tests your devices and systems. Plus has to be completed within three months of passing the basic certification.

How long does Cyber Essentials take?

Basic Cyber Essentials typically takes four to eight weeks for a manufacturer, including fixing what the self-assessment uncovers. Cyber Essentials Plus usually takes two to three months. Both last 12 months, so book the renewal well before the expiry date, ideally ahead of your next tender deadline.

Where does your business stand?

Most manufacturers I speak to have a rough idea. Buyers want proof. The free Bid & Tender Readiness Screening takes two minutes and shows you, category by category, where a buyer would stop reading. Does that make sense?
